U.S. Rep. Susan Wild calls on Congress to guarantee abortion rights, reduce health care costs

07/15/2022

U.S. Rep. Susan Wild (D-Lehigh Valley) pushed to solidify abortion rights at the federal level when she spoke virtually Thursday about a need to expand women’s access to health care.

Wild was joined by women’s rights advocacy organizations to discuss what she called an immediate need for Congress to act.

“Right now, in states across the country, including my own state of Pennsylvania, efforts are underway to restrict women’s freedom to make medical choices for themselves,” she said.

“Being in good health is fundamental to being able to lead a successful life. And, being in control of your own health, empowering you to make your own decisions, is a non-negotiable component.”

Pennsylvania’s Republican-controlled Senate recently approved amending the state constitution to say the commonwealth does not grant a right to an abortion.

Democratic Gov. Tom Wolf has vowed to veto any legislation that would restrict abortion access, but this is Wolf’s last year in office and some worry what may happen after his term is up.

“It’s more urgent than ever that we continue our work in Congress to codify the right to abortion at the federal level while also passing legislation to lower health care costs,” said Wild, who is seeking re-election.

Wild also called on Congress to make permanent family health care tax credits that are part of the American Rescue Act.
